Wakeboarding Tricks - Understanding the Terminology

by Jessica P

You may have just begun wakeboarding, or you are thinking of picking it up. In this case you will need to talk to others who are skilled, and of course you don't want to sound like a dummy! To make things easier for you as you start learning, here are some basic wakeboarding tricks and terms.

Air - Really a very important wakeboarding term you should know. This simply means how much 'air' you get between you and the water or how high you go. When someone says you got 'big air' it means that you really went high, which is considered good!

Bail - This term describes falling on your wakeboard.

Bindings - This is how you stay on your board: You put on these rubber boots attached to the board.

Bone Out - This is one of the wakeboarding tricks terms that means you have straightened out your leg. When you 'bone out grab,' you straighten your leg while you are grabbing.

Digger - 'Bad wreck.' You really don't want to get yourself into a digger.

Invert - When a rider flips upside down in the air, that's an invert.

Nose - The tip of the board; the end that is closest to the wakeboarding boat.

Set - When you take turns on the wakeboard with other riders, each turn is called a 'set'. Set is just another way of saying 'turn' here.

This is just a list of the most basic terms you should be familiar with before you start learning. Now, when you talk to someone who is skilled at wakeboarding, you will at least be able to communicate with them! You might be a 'newbie,' but you don't want to sound like one!

Wakeboarding is one of the most fun sports in the world. Use this lingo for wakeboarding tricks and terms to help you learn. Oh, and by the way, DON'T break a leg!
