Treating Brontophobia, The Fear Of Lightning and Thunder With Hypnotherapy

by Alan Densky

Brontophobia is a widespread condition that many men, women, and children around the world possess; the fear of lightning and thunder. For as long as this fear has existed, people have been looking for methods to overcome it. Currently there are many treatment options available. To help vanquish this phobia, experts call for certain hypnotherapy techniques that are proven effective in relieving fears and anxiety.

Brontophobia sufferers possess an extreme fear of thunder and lightning. Loud, startling thunder and flashes of lightning can set off nervousness and anxiety attacks in brontophobia sufferers. Other effects include an increased heartrate, sweating, and an intense sensation of fear, which increases until a person feels ill.

The fear of lightning and thunder begins early for many people, when as kids, we cower under the covers during a serious storm. The phobia can be particularly overwhelming for children. Many scared children feel helpless during a storm, and their parents often feel powerless to relieve their phobia.

In spite of its common occurrence in adolescents, brontophobia can develop at any time, frequently after a person has an unpleasant experience such as getting a static shock, which reminds them of a lightning strike. A stressful experience such as living through a tropical storm may also create a fear of thunderstorms.

Many people may come to associate loud sounds, the sensation of pain, or shock with thunderstorms, which may result in a significant phobia. Brontophobia is so common that it is even seen in many animals; for example, many pet owners notice that their pet cats seem upset during thundering.

Phobia sufferers try to avoid seeing or hearing storms. People may suffer nervousness during storm disasters such as tornadoes. This can put them in danger if they cannot function under circumstances which requires them to stay calm and react rationally.

Phobia sufferers may come to dread storm season, often suffering during times of the year when storms are common. They might continually check weather reports and behave extra cautiously during periods of bad weather. To other people, these actions may seem obsessive and paranoid. Phobia suffers may find this condition slowly taking control of their lives.

A wide range of options are available for treating brontophobia and other strong fears. Common ones include counseling, anti-anxiety medication, and hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy tends to offer safer, faster results and it is non-invasive, having no side effects. For these reasons and many more, hypnotherapy is now a widely used therapy.

Hypnosis therapy is notable as a type of stress-relief therapy and has traditionally been used for its soothing properties. By beginning with relaxation techniques, hypnotherapy helps tense, troubled individuals with phobias begin the process of healing. When a person is feeling calm, it is easier for hypnotherapy techniques to direct the unconscious into a phobia-free thought process.

All phobias are connected to negative images or triggers, which become connected to fear inside the unconscious mind. For brontophobia sufferers, the sound of thunder, the sight of lightning, or even the scent of rain often provokes a deep fear. Hypnotherapy and Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) work at the unconscious level of the mind to disconnect fear from these triggers to deliver powerful fear relief. One of the most effective techniques is called the NLP Visual/Kinesthetic Disassociation.

Ericksonian hypnotherapy is a type of hypnotherapy that is often used to treat fears. Named after pioneering developer, Dr. Milton Erickson, MD, this type of hypnotherapy uses indirect suggestions hidden in metaphors, conversation, and stories to treat a phobia. Indirect suggestions are more effective than conventional post-hypnotic direct suggestions because people tend to question, resist, and reject direct orders. Those which are hidden from conscious thought are more able to help people to vanquish their fears.

NLP techniques and Ericksonian hypnotherapy have another advantage over conventional hypnotherapy programs because they are designed to work for any phobia. Thus, a single program is effective for treating any phobia, or even more than one phobia if necessary. Plus, each program utilizes a number of techniques to work for any individual.

Hypnosis therapy is the best treatment option for many, which offers quick and long-lasting results. Cowering in bed and being panicked is not the way a phobia sufferer should live. Using hypnotherapy and NLP techniques, virtually anyone can overcome this serious phobia.
