Words That Destroy Relationships

by Eric Menzies

Professionals understand that husband or wife beating is one of the worst situations that can arise. Police see such issues much more frequently than once a day They will tell you that more often than not, such troubles lead to the end of one or both partners. An unfortunate truth is that more relationships are ended with a verbal battle than at the end of a knife or gun.

Many don't realize that it is not physical assault nor dangerous weapons that irrevocably destroy relationships. It's in actuality something far worse that causes relationships to cease to exist. Are you curious to know what kind of weapon does the most damage?

Communication!

INXS preforms a song that is one of the songs that I really like called "The Devil Inside" and in it they sing about the frailties of people. At one point in the song they sing a line that expresses my thoughts better than I can, "Words as weapons sharper than knives. Makes you wonder how the other half dies." When they sing that line, they are referring to women, but I think it also applies to men.

Most of us heard way to many times when we were growing up "Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me." While that is certainly a mindset we should all strive for, it is rarely the truth. Words hurt more people than any weapon ever created by us. The problem is that many people shoot off their mouths when they feel slighted in some way, spraying toxic verbal bullets that they can never take back.

An old adage goes, "you can never unring a bell once it has rung." This adage could just as well be applied to the things you say. Once you unleash your anger, you cannot pull it back. You can apologize, but it will not make up for the hurt you have caused. The injuries you cause your loved one may not be something you can see, but they may hurtful and long-lasting as if you stabbed them with a knife.
