Numbness in Fingers Can Signal Carpal Tunnel or Repetitive Stress Injury

by Frank Barnett

Are you dealing with numbness in the fingers of your hands? If so, this could be a sign of a couple of problems. Two of the most common problems related to finger numbness are carpal tunnel syndrome and repetitive stress injury. Both of these problems can cause this as well as other symptoms. So, here's a closer look at both problems and a bit about them that will help you figure out which problem you may be dealing with.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a serious problem that can cause your fingers to lose feeling. The carpal tunnel passes through the wrist on the same side as the palm of your hand, and it serves to protect tendons and the median nerve. If excessive pressure is placed on the median nerve, various physical problems such as numbness can result.

Other Possible Symptoms: Although numbness in the fingers is the main symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, there are other symptoms as well. Tingling that is felt in the hands and fingers are another symptom. Pain in the wrist, fingers and up into the arm is another possible symptom. Carpal tunnel can also cause weakness in the hand and arm and it can even lead to problems with lifting and carrying objects.

-The Risks - There are a variety of different risk factors that can make you more likely to develop carpal tunnel syndrome which you need to know about. Often occupations that involved making wrist motions that are repetitive can lead to the condition. Certain occupations, such as those that include working with computers, typing, and workers on assembly lines, can be more at risk. Pregnancy, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and even rheumatoid arthritis can make you more at risk as well.

Repetitive Stress Injury: Another problem which may lead to numbness of the fingers is repetitive stress injury. Such injuries essentially are those which may occur if you perform particular motions time and time again. In this situation, it includes repetitively using the hands and the wrists. Some injuries which may be included are bursitis, tendonitis, epicondylitis, tenosynovitis, and trigger finger.

Causes: Why does repetitive stress injury actually occur? Well it often occurs due to too many repetitions of a certain motion. Another reason for this type of injury is unnatural wrist movements. Muscle fatigue, over exertion and poor posture are other possible reasons for repetitive stress injuries.

Among the symptoms of repetitive stress injuries, finger numbness is only one of the symptoms involved. Among the variety of other symptoms that can indicate repetitive stress injuries are pain in the fingers and hands, tingling in these areas can also be a problem. Still other possible symptoms are loss of strength, loss of flexibility, redness in the area, and even possible swelling.

Both of these problems, carpal tunnel and repetitive stress injury, can lead to numbness in your fingers. You may need to see your doctor so he can decide which problem you are dealing with and to prescribe the proper treatment.

Often improper ergonomic setup can be the culprit, with simple and inexpensive or even free solutions. Take a look at ergonomic resources for more tips!
