Is there a Difference Between Weight Lifting and Body Building?
Yes. Just ask that question to a "bodybuilder" or a "weightlifter" and you could get a load of an reply. While it is very true that bodybuilders and weightlifters will train with weights - they are two very different activities, with two varying and distinct achievable goals, especially when we are talking about them on the professional or semi-professional competitive level.
A professional or competitive bodybuilder is mainly concerned with his appearance. They are looking for an complete body images that gives off a cut and hard and well defined muscle mass to its most visual outward look. A weightlifter on the other hand is chiefly concerned the strength in the specific areas of their competition. In other words the muscles that are most important during a Snatch or Deadlift competition. Specifically the competitive bodybuilder, showing in a competition has little to do with your strength or how much you can lift, but how well your overall physique looks. Most of the muscles on a competitive bodybuilder should appear symmetrical, and proportional, so bodybuilders try to out all parts of the body equally.
Now if you are not planning on competing in either sport the distinction may not really be that important to you. However, the discussion how significant it is to clearly realizeyour ultimate goals as to why you are lifting weights. Are you looking to improve your physique? Increase your strength and stamina? Or maybe a little of both? If you aren't competitor, it really matters less what you identify with, then what you want to achieve with weightlifting. When you decide what you want to get out of a weightlifting regimen you can then design a series of routines, exercises and lifestyle changes to achieve your goals. Bodybuilding
